What is The Function of a Tugboat That Has Great Power?

Tugboats are ships used for maneuvering/movement, mainly pulling or pushing other ships in harbors, open seas or through rivers or canals. The size of a tugboat is indeed not as big as regular ships. However, it has more power. Even tugboats are also used to tow barges, damaged ships, and other equipment. Tugboats have a lot of power when compared to their size.

What are the Functions of Tugboat?

1. As an Mover

At the time other ships that need propulsion such as ships carrying goods. So the presence of this tugboat is needed to carry out the best movement in its utilization as the transportation of mining goods. As the prime mover, of course, providing support to other ships that need assistance.

That is why this tugboat can be this ship in carrying out movements in the waters. Because other ships are greatly helped by the presence of the tugboat. Although the shape is not big but capable of being the dominant mover in the ocean.

2. Attracting Other Ships

If something unexpected happens at sea, the function of this tugboat can be a ship that is able to tow other ships. This can be done in a very easy and good way, where the user will maneuver the existing ship. That is why tugboats play a very important role in the ocean.

So other ships such as wrecked ships, barges and others will use tugboats as towing aids. Then the work will be more efficient when there is a problem with the presence of the tugboat.

3. Do the Maneuver

In the waters, maneuvering is the main thing that must be done by a ship. Because the ship is very important in facilitating its users to complete the work. Especially when it comes to transporting mining goods.

So the importance of maneuvering perfectly is done by tugboats on the high seas. With the support of other ships that do other work to expedite the delivery of goods. So this tugboat is the mother of other ships to maneuver and move other ships.

In accordance with the rules in Article 3 PM 93 of 2019 Concerning Ship Guidance Auxiliary Facilities and Infrastructure, there are three categories of ships assisted by tugboats or tugboats:

- 70-150 meters using 1 tugboat

- 150-250 meters using 2 tugboats

- 250 and above using at least 3 tugboats

Tugboat main engines generally produce 750–3,000 horsepower. Meanwhile, tugboats used on the high seas can reach 25,000 horsepower.

Old tugboats used steam engines, but now they use diesel engines. Tugboat main engines typically produce between 750 and 3000 horsepower (500 to 2000 kW), but on larger vessels, use on the high seas can generate up to 25000 horsepower (20000 kW).

Most of the engines used are the same as train engines, but on ships drive propellers. For safety, a minimum of two main engines is usually used. Tugboats have high maneuverability, depending on the propulsion unit. Conventional propulsion tugboats have propellers behind, efficient for towing ships from port to port.

How Many Persons Are in the Tugboat Crew?

Each tugboat used in pilotage services must be manned by at least 9 people. The tugboat captain must have a minimum diploma of level III nautical expert. Then, the head of the tugboat engine room has a minimum diploma of a level III technical expert and other proficiency certificates required in accordance with the provisions of the legislation.
