What Needs to be Done for Ship Maintenance?

Maintenance of ships are important to maintain lifetime from the ship itself and keep the ship always in good condition. In general, maintenance and maintenance can be carried out both at sea conditions both by raising the ship into the dock. This method is also used for those used to care for the hull of the ship which is constantly exposed to water that is quite corrosive. Docking ships are usually done in 2.5 years or every 5 years in accordance with the periodical survey conducted.

Types of ship maintenance

Ships are a means of transportation that continues and there are many other factors such as weather, waves, quality of use and others, then a treatment must be done. Here are the types of ship maintenance:

Preventive Maintenance / Periodic Maintenance: Based on the schedule to prevent damage. Example: cleaning, lubrication, adjustment, inspection and change. This treatment is divided into 2, namely when running and when shutdown.

Predictive maintenance: based on certain conditions (condition base) to avoid damage. Example: observation of temperature, pressure, vibration parameters.

Corrective Maintenance: Improving engine conditions (power up)/ returning the engine to its original condition (recovery) and also modification. Example: Overhaul.

Breakdown maintenance. Treatment after damage (repair).

Ship maintenance function

Maintenance on a better ship and broadly the aim is as follows:

Optimizing the power and use of the material according to its function and benefits (efficiency material).

Prevent sudden severe damage (breakdown), and prevent decreased efficiency.

Reducing sudden damage or unemployment means to increase the effective days of the ship's work (commission days)

Keeping and extending the lifetime of the ship

Reducing the amount of improvement and time repairs when the ship carries out the repair of the Annual Dock (Economical Days)

Maintenance and maintenance of SEMA equipment on this ship must be carried out regularly. If a ship is not carried out regularly, it will have an impact on the decline in conditions and performance of the ship itself. This ship maintenance procedure must also refer to guidelines and references based on the Plan Maintenance System (PMS), manufacturers of machinery and ship equipment, experience from engineers, and previous repair trends.

A ship maintenance needs to be done with certain intervals based on the operating hours of the ship. But in addition to the maintenance of ships based on the operating hours period, sometimes there are improvements that must be made when the ship experiences sudden problems on a trip.
